چکیده

The Ginzburg}Landau model for the radiation "eld of a free-electron laser (FEL) was originally derived for a high-gain ampli"er (S.Y. Cai and A. Bhattacharjee, Phys. Rev. A 43 (1991) 6934). With a view to making precise comparisons with experimental data from the long-pulse FEL oscillator at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) (L.R. Elias, G. Ramian, J. Hu, A. Amir, Phys. Rev. Lett. 57 (1986) 424), we have developed a new formulation of the Ginzburg}Landau model starting from the low-gain oscillator equations. We implement a small-amplitude expansion of the radiation "eld, and derive the coe$cients of the Ginzburg}Landau equation by analysis as well as by Mathematica. Stability analysis of the Ginzburg}Landau equation produces results similar to those obtained by T.M. Antonsen and B. Levush (Phys. Fluids B 1 (1989) 1097). These include the stability of the main mode (no Benjamin}Feir instability), phaseunstable o!-centered modes (Eckhaus instability), as well as relaxation to the single mode which occurs much faster in amplitude than in phase. We obtain the saturated radiation amplitude a 0 as functions of the detuning parameter p */+ and cavity loss, and determine the phase instability boundary in the a 0 !p */+ plane. The probability of realizing a single mode starting with random initial conditions is calculated and compared with spectral measurements from the UCSB FEL. ( 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Ginzburg-Landau Model and Single-Mode Operation of a Free-Electron Laser Oscillator

It is shown that the radiation field in a long-pulse, low-gain free-electron laser oscillator obeys the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. The question of single-mode operation is investigated by analysis and simulation, and the results are compared with experiments at the University of California at Santa Barbara, as well as the Dutch fusion free-electron-maser experiment. It is shown that the ...

Numerical study on self-similar pulses in mode-locking fiber laser by coupled Ginzburg-Landau equation model.

A theoretical model is established to study the self-similar pulses in nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) mode-locked fiber lasers. The propagation of pulse in single mode fibers and gain fibers are described by coupled Ginzburg- Landau equation (GLE). Two wave plates and a polarizer are considered to realize the NPE mechanism in simulation. This model describes the laser completely and pro...

Ginzburg-Landau model for mode competition and single-mode operation of a free-electron laser

Mode competition of a free-electron laser is modeled by the Ginzburg-Landau equation. The stability of a single-mode solution is analyzed, and connections are established with known instabilities of the GinzburgLandau equation. It is found that the principal mode with the largest gain is always stable and hence there is no Benjamin-Feir instability. However, the Eckhaus ~or phase! instability g...

Exact solutions of the 2D Ginzburg-Landau equation by the first integral method

The first integral method is an efficient method for obtaining exact solutions of some nonlinear partial differential equations. This method can be applied to non integrable equations as well as to integrable ones. In this paper, the first integral method is used to construct exact solutions of the 2D Ginzburg-Landau equation.
